Lip Sync Battle!

 

Do you like to lip sync and have fun on stage?  This activity is for you!

 

Tryouts and Application Form

This year’s annual Air Guitar Battle is scheduled for December 21ST!  We want people who can lip-sync and have a good time on stage pretending to be their favorite band or singer. 

 

  • Tryouts will be held December 12th, immediately after school, in the Seahawk Center. 
  • Acts should be 1 to 2 minutes long and appropriate for school. 
  • Students wanting to participate need to have good citizenship (O or S in citizenship) and good academic standing (As, Bs or Cs in all classes)

How to pick a song?

 

1. A good beat/energetic

2. Tells a story that can be acted out and lip synced

3. Song has “characters”: wear a costume or dress up

4. Can be funny, you can mock or make fun of a group

5. Song needs to be no more than 2 minutes in length

6. Bring song to tryouts using a CD, flash drive or iPod/mp3 player that has a headphone jack (ie: no Iphone 7, 8 or X)!

 

 

FYI: We have a lot of good acts trying out.  If you want to be picked to perform, practice, practice, practice!!!

Students who are riding bikes, skateboards and scooters must wear helmets to and from school in order to be allowed to use this as appropriate transportation.  Students who arrive to school without helmets will not be allowed to leave on a bike, skateboard or scooter.  Parent will be notified. 

 

 

ARTICLE 4. Operation of Bicycles [21200 - 21213] 
  

(a) A person under 18 years of age shall not operate a bicycle, a nonmotorized scooter, or a skateboard, nor shall they wear in-line or roller skates, nor ride upon a bicycle, a nonmotorized scooter, or a skateboard as a passenger, upon a street, bikeway, as defined in Section 890.4 of the Streets and Highways Code, or any other public bicycle path or trail unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet that meets the standards of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), or standards subsequently established by those entities. This requirement also applies to a person who rides upon a bicycle while in a restraining seat that is attached to the bicycle or in a trailer towed by the bicycle.

We will be participating in the Great California Shakeout Drill this Thursday, October 19th, at approximately 10:10 am.  During the drill, students will be practicing a Duck and cover Drill as well as staff practicing emergency procedures.  Students will be on the field for approximately 20-30 minutes, so they are encouraged to wear protective hats and sunscreen. 

 

Parents trying to check students out during the time period of 10:10 am through 10:40 am may experience a delay due to staff practicing procedures.

Halloween Costume Contest and Guidelines

 

On Friday, October 27th, ASB is sponsoring a costume contest.  All students who wear a costume to school should apply the S.O.A.R. philosophy and refer to SMS dress code policy* to see if costumes will be appropriate for school.  Students wearing inappropriate costumes will be asked to change into their P.E. clothes.  In addition, students will NOT be allowed to wear masks, carry toy weapons, or wear gang related attire.  If students have questions, they can ask Mr. Campbell or an ASB student.

 

*You can wear hats and face paint. Teacher discretion in class if costume is distracting.

We are off to an amazing start to our Step It Up fitness fundraiser! We had over 312 families registering 358 students who then sent out emails to their family and friends last night!

 

We have some individual students who have raised $300 or more online in the first night! It’s that easy!

 

Because of this amazing success, we have EXTENDED the deadline to send your 10+ emails for one more day, and your student will still qualify for all of the SUCCESS SHEET prizes!

First and foremost, Shorecliffs Middle School Staff and Teachers are looking forward to working with all of you

to ensure the academic and social success of your child.

As you know, student registration begins next week, so if you missed packet pick-up this week,

please come to the office between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to pick up your registration packet.

 

In addition to the registration packet, please remember, all parents must go onto the parent portal

to complete the online paperwork and print out the Data Confirmation page.

 

Information on how to access the portal and data confirmation page are in the registration packet.

Without the Data Confirmation page, students will not be able to receive their schedule.

 

Without proof of Tdap immunization, incoming 7th grade students will not be able to receive their schedule.

It is with great pleasure that we announce our revisions of CUSD Course Placement Guidelines.  Our staff has been working diligently over the course of the school year to revise districtwide placement criteria in English, History-Social Science, Mathematics and Science in grades 6 through 12.  These guidelines can be found on our District Website under the Parent Resource tab and on each high school’s website under the Guidance tab.  Please take an opportunity to review these guidelines with your son/daughter as their Academic Advisors and teachers will be using these guidelines for Fall registration.

 

In addition to these guidelines, we have exciting news for students who have decided to challenge themselves by taking an Honors Level or Advanced Placement course. Summer assignments and assignments over Winter Break will no longer be allowed.  However, as June 1st approaches and you begin planning your break, we offer you several resources and ideas for optional summer reading.  Below are some resources to assist you in selecting books.

 

The California Recommended Literature List is a searchable database of a collection of outstanding literature for children and adolescents in grades prekindergarten through grade twelve in all disciplines. Each book has a description called an "annotation" describing the book.

 

The Find a Book, California tool offers students over 160,000 books from which to choose. This book-search tool enables individuals to build custom reading lists based on Lexile range, grade level, and/or personal interests. The Find A Book program is a national, state-led summer reading initiative sponsored by the Council of Chief State Schools Officers.

 

Renaissance Learning is a company with an international presence whose “primary purpose is to accelerate learning for all children and adults of all ability levels and ethnic and social backgrounds, worldwide.” They provide a free, online tool to assist in finding the most appropriate and engaging books for students.

Dear Shorecliffs Families,

 

Every spring, students in grades three through eight and grade eleven take the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) for English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics. Results from these assessments are just one piece of information to help teachers, parents/guardians, and students understand how well a student is meeting the grade-level standards.

 

The formal testing dates for this school year started on Monday, April 24th and will end Friday, May 12thStudents will be testing in their English and Math classes, and will be on a block schedule Wednesday and Thursday during the next two weeks (please below). It is important that your child have the time necessary to perform at their best on the tests, so please make sure to be on time daily and avoid scheduling any non-necessary appointments that would require your student to miss any part of the school day during the testing dates.  Since testing will occur at different times of the school day, maintaining a regular sleep schedule and making sure your student has healthy snacks on-hand will help your student perform at his/her best. 

 

2 Day Block Schedule 2 Weeks  - Wednesday and Thursday ONLY (May 1st –May 12th )

Wednesday we will have periods 1, 3 and 5 ONLY.  Thursday we will have periods 2, 4 and 6 ONLY.  Students who have independent PE or modified schedule, please check schedule.  There is no 6th period on Wednesday and no 1st period on Thursday. Both days will have zero period during normal times.

8th Grade Dance Fundraiser

To make your dance memorable, 8th graders are asked to donate drinks to be sold at “Open House” on April 27th.  All money raised will be given to PTA and applied to your dance.

 

The following items are needed:

Bring in a case or two, maybe a six pack, every bit helps! Please no glass or 2 liter bottles.

Safety First

 

Parents and students, please be advised regarding our concerns for student safety when traveling to and from school near the outlet mall.   With the opening of the new outlet mall, there are more cars and foot traffic than in the past.  Students traveling through the outlet mall to be dropped off or picked up should use the appropriate walkways.  Using the crosswalk, walking paths and obeying traffic lights and signs are the expected behavior when traveling to and from school.  Running across the street, not using crosswalks, and haphazardly walking along or sitting on the bridge ledge is a huge cause for concern. The Outlets at San Clemente Security Department as well and our San Clemente Deputies and school staff will be observing traffic and student behavior.  Students may be ticketed for not following pedestrian/traffic rules and regulations.  If you see any inappropriate behavior, please call the school office at (949) 498-1660 or report to Text-A-Tip at (949) 682-TIP1.

The Shorecliffs Annual Talent Show is coming up on Thursday, March 23rd   and Friday, March 24th.   Showtimes from 7PM to 9PM.

 

1. Students can buy tickets for $5 during lunch before they sell out.

3. Tickets will be sold during lunch all week.

What is ASB?

ASB is a student leadership class that creates activities throughout the year to improve school spirit and culture.  Students determine how funds are spent and plan large and small events that impact the school positively.

 

In the past, ASB has run various fundraisers, designed and created dances, lunch activities, school wide spirit days, lip sync assemblies and the talent shows, just to name a few.  If you'd like to be a part of this and have a positive impact on the school, then ASB is for you!

 

Students who qualify to be in ASB must meet the following criteria.  (Standards are set high because these students will represent Shorecliffs on campus and in the community.)

A. 2.75 GPA or higher

B. "Satisfactory" or "Outstanding" marks in citizenship 

C. Positive teacher recommendations

D. Not on a Behavioral Contract

If you can sing, dance, play an instrument or anything else that requires talent, practice now because try outs will be held on Monday March 13th for 6th graders, on Tuesday March 14th for 7th graders, and on Wednesday March 15th for 8th graders. All tryouts will start at 3:30pm in the Seahawk Center!  If you have mixed grade levels show up at either tryout day.

 

Talent show will be held on March 23rd and March 24th from 7-9PM in the Seahawk Center.

Acts should be no longer than 3 minutes long.  Students who qualify to be in the talent show must be in good academic standing (above 2.0), good citizenship (no U’s), have no demerits and must be students at Shorecliffs.

 

If you plan on trying out for the talent show, fill out the attached form (or pick one up at the front office) and hand into Mr. Campbell when you try out.

Each year CUSD and UCI Basketball partner to bring math and basketball to life.  

 

Attached is more information regarding registering for the tickets and the link to receive the tickets.

 

There is a 1,500 ticket limit this year, so although the online registration deadline is Sunday, February 26, we anticipate that the 1,500 available tickets might be reserved prior to that date, so parents are encouraged to register early at: http://ucirvinesports.com/CAPO2017 .  The game will be televised on Prime Ticket, so any students who cannot attend the game could watch it on TV and use the generic tally sheet (see attached English and Spanish versions) to record the statistics at home for the same amount of extra credit as is given for those who attend.

Raising Teens in a Complicated World

The Wellness & Prevention Center is pleased to announce a monthly parent discussion group designed to address issues in the evolving relationship between you and your teen.

MONTHLY MEETINGS: 3rd Monday Nights 6:45 pm to 8:30 pm San Clemente High School Triton Center Conference Room 700 Avenida Presidio.

TOPICS WILL INCLUDE: January 16th - Secrets of the teen brain or why did my kid do that? Includes the detrimental effects of substance use to teen brain development. How can I tell if my teen is struggling with mental health symptoms or substance use?

February 13th (note this is the 2nd Monday due to holiday weekend) - Healthy teen activities -how do I encourage participation in substance free activities - do they even exist?

March 20th - Should I let my teen go to Coachella? and other unique Southern California challenges.

April 17th - Navigating end of school year activities safely. Plus, how to help your teen transition from middle to high school. Bring your questions and concerns to each meeting and we will do our best to discuss.

Dear Parents of Seventh Grade Students,

During the next two weeks, we will be using the Drug Free Communities Core survey to assess youth drug use in San Clemente.  The survey is being administered by our teachers through the direction of the Wellness & Prevention Center.  The purpose of the survey is to provide assessment data for a community prevention grant through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the Federal Government.  The answers are anonymous and cannot be traced to your child.  All data will be kept confidential and used only in developing a strategic plan for the grant request. FUTURE SJHHS STALLION BASKETBALL NIGHTS 

San Juan Hills High School would like to invite all our Future Stallions (Kindergarten - 8th grade) to attend  the upcoming basketball game and the “Future Stallions Basketball Shootout Competition.”

Boys game  - Friday, February 3rd at 7:00 PM in the SJHHS gym

Girls Game – Monday, February 6th at 7:00 PM in the SJHHS gym

According to CIF bylaws we can only offer a free t-shirt to students in elementary school so the first 100 kids will receive a free t-shirt at each game. However, middle school students can purchase a shirt for $5. Your children do not need to sign-up to attend either game.  They will gain free admission if they say what school they are from and they are also welcome to attend both games. We look forward to this winter event and hope to build off the excitement generated at the football toss this past fall. As a reminder, all kids will get in for free but parents/family will need to pay to get into the game. Adult admission to the game is $8.

Parents and students, please be advised regarding our concerns for student safety when traveling to and from school near the outlet mall.   With the opening of the new outlet mall, there are more cars and foot traffic than in the past.  Students traveling through the outlet mall to be dropped off or picked up should use the appropriate walkways.  Using the crosswalk, walking paths and obeying traffic lights and signs are the expected behavior when traveling to and from school.  Running across the street, not using crosswalks, and haphazardly walking along or sitting on the bridge ledge is a huge cause for concern. The Outlets at San Clemente Security Department as well and our San Clemente Deputies and school staff will be observing traffic and student behavior.  Students may be ticketed for not following pedestrian/traffic rules and regulations.  If you see any inappropriate behavior, please call the school office at (949) 498-1660 or report to Text-A-Tip at (949) 682-TIP1.

Community members who wish to stay up to date with school messages should sign up here.  Parents of students in the school should not sign up for this service as doing so will result in double messaging.  As an additional service, community members and parents may also download the CUSD app on iTunes and Google Play to receive the same community messages via notifications.

CAPISTRANO HOME/VIRTUAL SCHOOL

LOOKING FOR A MORE FLEXIBLE SCHOOL SCHEDULE? Capistrano Unified School District offers students the opportunity to enroll in the district’s kindergarten through 8th grade online and home school --- Capistrano Home/Virtual School. The elementary online school provides instruction, videos and workbooks for students as the parent takes on the role of “coach” guiding the student through weekly online and offline activities.  The middle school is entirely web-based and students can access their courses throughout the week around their schedules.  The home school option provides K-8 parents with all the CUSD textbooks and materials needed to teach their students at home, in addition to instructional digital resources to supplement lessons.  Middle school students may take up to two classes at their neighborhood school and elementary students may participate in art and music classes at their neighborhood school, depending on site availability.  If you are interested in learning more, please call us at 949-234-9374. Parent Volunteers Please Read!

 

As always, we both welcome and encourage parent volunteers. Please be aware of the volunteer policy that is in effect throughout CUSD. Please refer to www.capousd.org for specific information, requirements and details. If you do come to school to volunteer in a class or attend a meeting, PLEASE SIGN IN, even if you are a regular, friendly well known face! Our sign in procedure is one way to help ensure a safe campus for all of the children and adults.  In addition, please bring a PHOTO ID when picking up your child early from school. Your identification will be verified with the Student Emergency Information for security purposes. Please do not enter the school campus from any other location than the front school office. Finally, please make arrangements for your child’s pick up and any other special directions or changes before he/she comes to school in the morning. We hope that you will always feel welcome and appreciated at our school! We encourage and are grateful for our volunteers.

 

SBA Student Score Reports 

The District is still in process of receiving the 2015-2016 Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) Student Score Reports. While the California Department of Education (CDE) will release summarized district and school data on August 24th, the paper copies of individual student scores usually take a little longer to reach districts. CUSD expects to receive all Student Score Reports by mid-September and anticipates sending score reports home to parents the week of September 12th

School Accountability Report Cards (SARCs) –  Every school in California is required by state law to publish a School Accountability Report Card (SARC) by February 1 of each year.  The SARC contains information about the condition and performance of each California public school.  Our school’s SARC is available for review by clicking on the following link:

Due to slow sales the yearbook deadline has been extended to March 3rd.  Yearbook is selling baby ads for all 8th graders through February 24th. Yearbook will be handing out flyers to all 8th graders on Wednesday, January 25th, with all the information you need (or print the attached flyer).  So, parents ask your 8th grader all about it.  It is a great way to recognize your child's middle school years and support the yearbook at the same time.  Turn the flyer into the office or Mr.Morales' room.    Room 203 or 308.

NJHS will be running a box top drive again to raise money for the SMS PTA.  Please save your box tops, collect them from friends and family, and help support our school.  

 

Students raised over $500 in box tops in the Fall.

Attention 7th and 8th Graders: 

 

Do you have As and Bs?  Do you want to be recognized for your hard work?  Do you want to be a part of an organization that looks awesome on college applications?

 

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should apply for California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF).  Applications were handed out during 8th grade math classes and 7th grade English classes. 

 

Remember, you must reapply every semester and points are awarded based on the grades you earned during 1st & 2nd Quarter of this school year.

 

Applications are due by February 2nd at 3:30pm.  Please see Ms. Peck in room 317 if you have any questions.

Students who qualified during the Step It Up fundraiser in the fall will have a V.I.P. day on January 19th.  Students can expect to have prizes delivered to them throughout the day!

 

During 3rd period, students will get out a little early to enjoy an In N Out burger for lunch!
